Floral foam introduction and function
Floral foam, also known as wet floral foam, is a material used in floristry to support and hydrate cut flowers and plants. It's a porous, sponge-like material that can absorb and retain water, helping to prolong the life of flowers and foliage in arrangements. Here's a more detailed look at floral foam: What it is: Floral foam is typically made of phenol resin, a type of plastic. It's designed to be lightweight and porous, allowing it to absorb and retain water. There are different types of floral foam, including wet foam (for fresh flowers) and dry foam (for artificial flowers). How it works: Wet floral foam is soaked before use, allowing it to absorb water. The water helps to hydrate the flowers and foliage, keeping them fresh and vibrant for longer. The foam also provides support, holding the flowers in place and allowing for intricate arrangements. Benefits: Increased flower life: Floral foam helps to keep cut flowers hydrated, extending their shelf life. Arrangement stability: The foam provides a stable base for floral arrangements, making them easier to create and transport. Easy to use: Floral foam can be easily cut and shaped to fit different containers and arrangements. Sustainability concerns: Floral foam is a plastic material that breaks down into microplastics, posing a risk to the environment. Some florists are exploring alternative materials like bio-based foam or biodegradable materials to reduce their environmental impact. Types of floral foam: Wet Floral Foam: Primarily used for fresh flowers, it soaks up and holds water. Dry Floral Foam: Designed for artificial flowers and arrangements, it doesn't need water. The only floral foam proven to provide flower life that lasts as long, or longer than flowers in a vase of water. It improves flower life by up to 50 percent longer! Floral Foam prevents premature petal burn, wilting, and stem burn. Flowers last longer, even if your forget to water them! Keep your designs looking beautiful and fresh longer with Floral Foam. Our solid strength, advanced equipment, and a comprehensive, scientific quality management system have enabled us to produce high-quality products such as FLORAL FOAM, WET FLORAL FOAM, and FLORAL TAPE.

Candler Park Flowers aims to brighten community
There is a warm and welcoming feeling when you walk by Candler Park Flowers. The bright colors of the flowers grab your attention right away, the green color outside of the shop making it hard to miss. The windows are filled with beautiful bouquets that invite people in. This little corner store isn’t just about selling flowers; it’s about helping the community with its floral arrangements needs, creating amazing arrangements for weddings, special events, proms, homecomings and local gatherings. Whether needing flowers for something big or just to brighten someone’s day, Candler Park Flowers is a special part of the neighborhood. “The team and staff are the best,” community member Brian Kyle said. “It’s clear that they like working there and always greet me. They make it very easy and efficient, I can drive up, pay and get home quickly.” Dawn Kee is the owner and founder of Candler Park Flowers. Opening the business in 2010, the unique flower arrangements, wreath designs and special events they provide for their customers are essential to their business and year-round event opportunities. “Our neighbors [the art studio] have let us use their space during those holidays for overflow and that has been tremendously helpful,” Kee said. “We get to know our customers, their kids, parents and even the dogs.” Having a skilled and dedicated team at Candler Park Flowers has been a significant factor contributing to the store’s ongoing success and its ability to maintain a loyal customer base. Kee finds that their unique flower arrangements also add to the interest of their store. “We carry flowers and plants that are a bit more unusual than most,” Kee said. “Whether it be the type of flower or just a more unusual color.” Forming relationships with their customers is an important value to Candler Park Flowers. Kee said the neighborhood is family-friendly; when walking around and seeing another neighbor know most of the time wave and smile. Keeping good relationships and remembering people’s names is just one of the little things that can set aside one store from another. “The majority of our business is walk-in customers buying handmade bouquets on the spot,” Kee said. With the store’s location in the middle of Candler Park, an area with many homes, and easy access to order via phone, sophomore Liam Walsh said picking the flowers up is the easiest part. “I would recommend this shop to my friends,” Walsh said. “Especially for anyone who lives in Candler Park because it is extremely convenient.” Many Midtown students use Kee and her business for boutonnieres and corsages during homecoming and prom in the fall and spring school year. “The ordering process was fairly easy and convenient,” Walsh said. “I was able to just do a quick five minute phone call and get everything all set.” The shop has been open for 14 years, building a strong reputation as a reliable part of the community. Kyle said their commitment and skill are what keeps customers coming back. “I tell the staff person what the occasion is and my budget,” Kyle said. “Then I trust their expertise to create the perfect arrangement.” The unique flower arrangements are the biggest part of their business. Being a small business in a neighborhood can be hard, but Kee said they do a great job of keeping their customers satisfied. “I love what I do,” Kee said. “It’s hard work and sometimes very grungy, but the end result is amazingly beautiful.” The Candler Park neighborhood is a place where both people and businesses like Candler Park Flowers benefit from a strong sense of connections, and a big community. Community member Rachel Bowser said this nurturing environment helps create a vibrant and inclusive environment that makes Candler Park a truly special place. “I feel good supporting a small business, especially one in my neighborhood,” Bowser said. “The small businesses we have are definitely the driving force behind the community we have here.”

What type of material is floral foam?
What type of material is floral foam? Floral foam is plastic. It’s different to other families of plastics found in packaging and more familiar manufacturing. The most closely related product is a type of house insulation foam, but other plastics in this family include bakelite and the very hard resin found in billiard balls. All these plastics belong to a group known as phenolic resins, or phenol formaldehydes. These were the very first plastics to be developed in the early 1900s. How does floral foam work? Under a microscope, the structure of floral foam is very much like honeycomb, with spaces between the connecting chambers that allow water to move through the material. Floral foam is also very similar to the cellular structure in a plant’s stem. Foam works by effectively becoming an extension of the flower’s stem. Before being cut, a plant receives water through the roots. However, when a stem is cut, water moves directly into the plant’s water vessels at the point where the cut has been made. This water is “pulled” up the stem by the action of water evaporating from the surface of leaves and the stem. Without water, the flower cannot open properly and will wilt and die. This movement of water into a flower’s stem happens when a freshly cut stem is placed in a vessel of clean water, without foam. When the stem is placed in foam, the movement of water happens first through the foam and then into the stem. The foam offers the added function of holding the stem in place. Although various claims are made about foam extending the life of flowers, one study found that floral foam can reduce the vase life of cut roses and concluded that “floral foam should not be used during the post-harvest handling of cut rose stems”. Re-cutting a bunch of flowers and changing the water once or twice during the bunch’s vase life is a simple, chemical free way to prolong flower life. This action helps the stem to continuously take up water by keeping the water vessels open and preventing the build-up of bacteria, which causes the vessels to become blocked.

Do you need to clean a patio in winter?
Garden outdoor living Do you need to clean a patio in winter? Paving experts say it’s key to avoiding these 3 expensive (and potentially dangerous) consequences Do you need to clean a patio in winter? Paving experts say it’s key to avoiding these 3 expensive (and potentially dangerous) consequences When temperatures drop and frost forms on the grass, you may feel inclined to shut yourself off from the outside world. But if you’ve spotted your patio looking a little worse for wear out of the window, you may wonder whether you need to clean a patio in winter. Although most people will spend their spring and summer months cleaning a patio so it looks its best during the peak outdoor seasons, they tend to wash their hands of it when they’ve successfully prepared their patio for winter and put it to bed for the colder months. But leaving it to its own devices over winter can be disastrous — and not just for your patio. So, do you need to clean a patio in winter? As Martin Beaumont of Monty Miracle explains, ‘Winter brings with it a whole host of challenges for your patio, so while the cold might not make it feel like the most natural time for you to be working in the garden, it’s wise to continue your cleaning and maintenance during the colder months.’ This is why. 1. It maintains a safe walking space 2. It prevents staining 3. It prevents patio damage Again, re-sealing your patio can work in your favour after this, as it should create a barrier between the outside elements and your patio throughout the winter months. But it’s still worth keeping an eye on it and stepping in before spring arrives if you spot something amiss. Can I use a mason jar as a cloche?
Can I use a mason jar as a cloche? We've already spoken about glass as a brilliant cloche material, but do mason jars fit the bill? 'In terms of size and style, mason jars are the ideal alternative to glass bell jar cloches,' says Morris from Hopes Grove Nurseries. 'They allow a great amount of sunlight and can protect individual plants over the winter. You'll just need to watch out for one small drawback. 'What mason jars lack is ventilation,' explains Morris. 'Many cloches will have some kind of vent to allow airflow, whereas mason jars don't have this. This doesn't mean you can't use them – it just means you need to place them down onto some kind of uneven surface (e.g. stones or gravel) to create small pockets of air.' Do cloches protect from slugs? Cloches are often tagged as barriers against pests, but just how effective are they at keeping slugs out? Well, they certainly can keep slugs at bay naturally – but only if they're set up properly. 'As they are open at the base and there are some gaps for ventilation, some small pests, including slugs, can still get through,' says Morris. 'If you want to protect your cloche-covered plants from slugs, you could pair the cloche up with another deterrent such as eggshells or coffee grounds!' If you're wondering what to use instead of a cloche in a garden, there are plenty of simple alternatives. Which of these DIY cloche ideas will you be trying?

Before applying fertilizer to any plants in your flower beds, it's a good idea to check, if and what, they actually need, by considering your soil health. Too much, or the wrong type of fertilizer, can be just as damaging to your plants as not enough. The run off from phosphorous and nitrogen-based fertilizers can also harm wildlife in waterways, causing algal bloom, and maybe restricted in your region. 'Peonies thrive in fertile, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter,' says Tabar Gifford, master gardener and representative, American Meadows. 'Before fertilizing, it's a good idea to test your soil to determine its nutrient composition. When Should I Use Wet Floral Foam?
In a previous article, we learnt how wet floral foam can be used for fresh flower arrangements and included a step-by-step guide on how to soak the foam correctly. You can also watch our video on how to soak floral foam. This article will help you determine which floral foam to use in your arrangement. Essentially, it will depend on the type of flowers used; fresh, artificial or dried flowers. Origins of Floral Foam In 1954 a gentleman named V.L. Smithers pioneered the water-absorbing foam for florists and changed the floral industry. Floral foam, whether wet or dry allows the floral designer to create beautiful arrangements that will hold and stay fresh and vibrant with its steady supply of water. Wet floral foam needs to be saturated in water prior to use where as dry floral foam can be used without water. Using Wet Floral Foam for Fresh Floral Arrangements Wet floral foam is designed to hold water for lengthy periods of time which makes it the ideal floral foam choice when working with fresh flowers. Start with either a pre-made shape or one you’ve cut yourself. After fully saturating the floral foam in water, (see the guide on how to soak floral foam) it can be placed in any type of waterproof container to your liking or used just the way it is after which you can start adorning it with fresh flowers. The fresh flowers will remain hydrated between seven to 10 days. Continue to add water to the container once daily so that the foam is kept wet. However, as a single-use plastic packaging item, floral foam has no place in sustainable floral design. We explain what floral foam is and why it is such a problem for the environment. Floral foam is at the base of flower arrangements all over the world. Floral foam origins Anybody who has worked in the flower industry will be familiar with the magical, green, water-absorbing blocks used to create flower arrangements. First created in the 1950s, floral foam soon became established as a useful packaging support and design medium for modern florists. But floral foam was not designed for purpose — it was a by-product from another industry that just happened to find a function in floral design. The ultimate convenience Floral foam is a remarkable product of great convenience. Not only does it hold up to 50 times its weight in water, but it can support a flower or foliage stem in a desired position and conduct water into the stem. It can be easily cut and shaped to fit into a container, and it is cheap to purchase, especially when compared with the cost of fresh flowers. As a packaging option, it makes transporting flower arrangements easier, keeping stems in place and preventing water spillage. These features of floral foam enabled floral design to move in extraordinary directions as the process of arranging became simpler and faster, as well as allowing for more complicated design. Before the invention of floral foam, florists did their arranging straight into vases or pots of water, using chicken wire or metal pins under the water line to secure the stems in place.
